Weekly Open Thread: What Races Are You Interested In?

Sorry for the quiet spell around here lately.  I’m on vacation until the 8th (but no vacation is complete without internet access to the Swing State Project, of course) and David has been busy ringing in the New Year and the new Democratic Congress in Washington, DC.  Did anyone have a chance to make it to the MCCXXIII Netroots reception?  Or did you get made fun of by your significant other for watching C-SPAN all afternoon, like me?

  1. I’m looking forward to the Mississippi, Kentucky, and Louisiana governors races this year.  Right now, it looks like we’ll keep the status quo in that 2 will be Republican and 1 will be Democratic (pickup in Kentucky and loss in Louisiana).  Hopefully, Blanco chooses not to run and lets another well-known Democrat run instead…that’s our only shot to hold on to LA.

  2. Patrick Murphy & Tim Walz (at the netroots party)
Brad Miller (hung out w/him in his office)
    Paul Hodes (at his office)
    Charlie Rangel (in the elevator!)

I also caught a glimpse of Gabby Giffords at the NJDC event. Met tons of other bloggers, netroots types, campaign people, etc. etc. It was a total blast.

  3. This will be an important race in ’08.  It’s never too early to start.  Knollenberg has already stated that he’s planning to run again. Nancy Skinner is still thinking about whether she’s going to make another run for it. Personally, I hope she does.  She gained a lot of name recognition in the last race and will need less ramp up time than someone new would.

  4. The NH Senate race looks interesting.
John Sununu is a freshman and is quite conservative, particularly for blue-trending New Hampshire.  Gary Hirshberg, CEO of Stonyfield Farms – the dairy company – recently said he was considering a run.  Hirshberg is well-known for his enviornmental activism.  But after the NH Democratic tidal wave of ’06 there’s been no shortage of Democrats interested in the race including former Gov. Jeanne Shaheen and Portsmouth Mayor Steve Marchand.

Sununu is a relatively low-key conservative Senator, similar to Missouri’s Jim Talent, but Sununu has to run in a bluer state.
